The medal was won by a French Silver Medalist in Fencing. It may have belonged to the Triple World Epee Champion Georges Buchard, who won a Silver Medal for Individual Epee at the 1928 and 1932 Olympics. However, it may have also belonged to any one of the Frenchmen who were part of the Silver Medal winning Team Foil and Team Epee in 1928. This is the only information that I was given regarding the ownership of this medal. This medal is very important historically because it represents the first year of the iconic Olympic Medal design that was used in all Summer Olympics Winner's medals for 72 years, from 1928 to 2000.On the front, victory is seated holding a laurel wreath and a palm branch, with the Colosseum in the background. There is an inscription in the foreground that reads, "IXe OLYMPIAD AMSTERDAM 1928." On the back, there is a victorious athlete holding a palm branch, and he is being carried by jubilant athletes, with the stadium in the background. The initials "GC" appear in the back lower field, which represent the initials of Giuseppe Cassioli, the medal designer. Condition: Extremely Fine, with minor superficial wear at the highest points and light scratches in the background fields. On the back, there is a superficial scratch across the arm of the victorious athlete and a tiny dent on his jaw. The medal has an original, silver patina that includes wonderful, subtle blue hues. Dimensions: Diameter- 2 1/4 inches (55 mm) Thickness- 4 mm Weight- 67 gramsEdge Markings: Dutch State Mint stampManufacturer: Dutch State Mint, Utrecht, NetherlandsThis is a rarely offered and impossible to find medal that represents the first year of the widely used Olympic Winner's Medal design that will be a centerpiece for any important collection. g Super Close-Up g Super Close-Up g Super Close-Up g Super Close-Up About Us: Our company offers the finest in original, hard to find collectibles by way of auction and catalog.
