Description
Presenting a truly wonderful piece of Horse Racing Memorabilia.  This 14K gold mint julep cup awarded by the world famous Keeneland Association in Lexington, Kentucky measures 4 inches high by 9 inches in circumference with a weight of 182.3 grams of gold.  The cup was made by Master Jeweler Mark J. Scearce in Shelbyville, Kentucky.  Keeneland awards a gold julep cup to the winning owner of each graded stakes race.  This cup was awarded to "Oil Capitol" for winning the Ben Ali Handicap in 1953.  Oil Capitol was owned by the very well known for horse racing family of Harry Trotsek and Hasty House Farms.  These beautiful cups are very scarce, and are rarely sold.  Mark J. Scearce and Wakefield Scearce Galleries have produced these cups since the early fifties.  Every cup that is made, sterling or gold, is stamped with an eagle and the President's initials at the time it was made.  For example, this cup bears the initials "H.T." for Harry Truman.  The Truman cup was the first ever produced and they are extremely rare.  When I took it to Shelbyville to Wakefield Scearce Galleries in 2003, I spoke to a gentleman that had worked there for thirty years and he had never seen a Truman cup.  These cups have an approximate value of $5,000 when new, according to Wakefield Scearce Galleries, but this cup is a truly rare find, and should bring much more.  I have taken this cup to the Antiques Roadshow appraiser Kenneth Hays and was told that it was worth no less than $5,000, but was it could bring was limitless.  The cup has a melt value of about $3,000, but that really isn't important.  Mark J. Scearce sterling cups can bring upwards of $450 depending on the presidents initials, compared to a traditional sterling cup bringing around $100.  Truman cups and Kennedy cups are the most valued, Kennedy for obvious reasons, and Truman because they were the first cups made, and very few of them exist.  Wakefield Scearce Galleries presents each President with a pair of sterling cups, but this is someone's chance to own a gold one.  This cup was given out during the second season that the gold cups were given out by Keeneland, and it is an important historic treasure.  This can be a true asset to anyone's personal collection, horse racing lover or not.  Any questions are more than welcome.  I will accept PAYPAL, but it is not preferred.  I will accept Money Orders, or a Cashiers Check if you would like to pick up the item in person in Lexington, Kentucky or the surrounding area.  I will accept a personal check, but there will be a two week waiting period before shipment with this option to allow the check to clear.  Shipping with full insurance will be free.
