Description
With the closing of Yankee Stadium at the end of the current season, memorabilia from the historic ballpark will be coveted by many. Well, here is your chance to pick up a super item that everyone you know will be the envy of: An actual retired number of a former Yankee legend, Billy Martin, that was alongside Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle and DiMaggio for many years in Monument Park. Pinstriped circle with Battling Billy's #1 in center measures 23 1/2", and is mounted on a blue background that is 28 x 32". In frame with name above, and “Original Emblem From Monument Park At Yankee Stadium” below. The plaque, which was in a podium setting in foreground of retired numbers, measures 18 x 24" and is framed as well. This one went up in 1986. Twenty-six autographs of players and coaches that were under the fiery manager at one time surround the number that Martin always strived to be. Includes Jim "Catfish" Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Don Mattingly, Ron Guidry, Tommy John, Bobby Murcer, Graig Nettles, Bob Lemon, Rich Gossage, Willie Randolph, Sparky Lyle, Mickey Rivers, Ed Figueroa, Chris Chambliss, Roy White, Fred Stanley, Jay Johnstone, Ron Blomberg, Rudy May, Jeff Torborg, Rick Cerone, Jim Spencer, Cliff Johnson, Ron Davis, Elliott Maddox and Bob Shirley. The signatures are in assorted Sharpies, and range from 6-9 overall, with some lightening from previous display. See my photos below what Monument Park looked like when this number was up, and the one of what the hallowed area looks like now. SERIOUS OFFERS ONLY for this important piece of Yankee memorabilia. This was sold thru Real Legends.com in 2001, after Monument Park was redone. Obviously, Barry Halper was able to get his hands on this through his strong Yankee connections. Includes Letter of Authenticity on Real Legends.com letterhead (Barry Halper's items), signed by Ceil Kunath, the wife of longtime Yankee sign painter, Richard Kunath. I am selling this fantastic Yankees piece for a major Bomber collector in the area. See the other two retired numbers up at the moment. Shipping to be determined after auction's end based on purchaser's location. I accept checks and money orders for payment.
