Description
RARE Antique Vintage Historic Tennis Item The item being offered here is part of the Allison Danzig Estate. Born in 1898, Mr. Danzig is widely considered one of only a handful of the greatest sports journalists and authors of the twentieth century. He was the lead New York Times sportswriter covering Tennis and Football from 1923 to 1968 as well as every Olympic Games from 1932 through 1960. He authored books on tennis, football and baseball. His Fireside Book Of Tennis is considered by many asTHE definitive reference. In Tennis he was the journalist without peer. He coined the term "Grand Slam" in the 1930's for achieving victory in what are now known as the four major tournaments of Tennis. In 1968 he was the first journalist ever to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. His many books on tennis, contributions to the reporting of its history, great matches and personalities have won him the lasting admiration of  his peers and its players alike. He is, literally, a legend in that sport. I am priviliged, on behalf of Mr. Danzig's Estate, to be able to offer the item below which will likely be of  keen interest to the advanced tennis collector. ______________________________________ Olivetti Lettera 32 Portable Typewriter The personal press box typewriter from approximately 1963 until his retirement in 1968 of the legendary Hall of Fame Member and Dean of Tennis Writers, "Mr. Tennis", Allison Danzig. Manufactured circa 1963-4, this blue typewriter comes with the original case. Marked, "Allison Danzig: New York Times" on the case as shown in the scan. This manual ( non-electric ) appears typewriter functional, but is offered here "as is" ( untested ) for display as a monumental and historic museum quality tennis memorabilia piece.  The typewriter is well worn at the edges as expected from travel and extensive usage. The case is worn and soiled from use and one of the two zippers on the case is off its track and not functioning. A notarized Letter of Provenance from Mr. Danzig's daughter will accompany this item. This document notes: "This is to certify that this blue Olivetti Lettera 32 portable typewriter with original case resided in my father's Estate and was his personal possession. He always carried it to the sporting events that her covered for The New York Times including all the major tennis tournaments and used it to type his official reports from the Press Box. " You can view a tribute to Danzig's legacy at : http://www.squashtalk.com/html/columns/zug4.htm As the tribute link above notes of Mr. Danzig:  "He neatly dressed in a suit and tie. In summer he could be seen in a seersucker suit, taking notes on an envelope or banging away at his beige Smith-Corona (which is now displayed in Newport). Because of his penchant for thoroughness and stylish prose, he was known as 'the last man out of the press box' ". Please note, as alluded to above, that while his beige ( electric ) typewriter is firmly esconced for public display at the Tennis Hall Of Fame in Newport that the unique opportunity exists here for the finest private collection of historic tennis artifacts to now obtain his portable typewriter that this greatest of all tennis writers used in the press box when he traveled to report on all of the greatest tennis championships around the world. Included with this offering is a postcard showing the interior of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI and the special display case in which Mr. Danzig's other beige typewriter is on permanent display. Please see the postcard views below. Buyer pays $15 shipping / insurance in 48 contiguous states of USA for this heavy item. Shipping to Hawaii or Alaska will be higher.
